Investing in Yourself

What is the number one asset in your portfolio? Is it your stocks, bonds, or other financial holdings? No, it’s you. YOU are your number one asset. YOU are going to be the thing that makes a difference between success and failure in your life. It is crucially important that you continually invest in yourself:

  1. Job promotions: In theory, we advance in our careers (and make more money) by making ourselves more valuable. We are more valuable because of what we know and what we can do. We learn more and are able to do more through hard work and a constant desire to learn more. Never stop learning and never be afraid to take on a new task.
  2. Graduate school: Young professionals return to graduate school not necessarily because the real world didn’t turn out to be all that cool, but because we believe the long term benefits of bettering ourselves will outweigh the short term costs of paying tuition.
  3. Get out and explore your world: You’ll meet new people and learn a lot about yourself while doing so. We can improve and grow as a person through these new experiences.
  4. Develop strong character traits: Do the right thing, even when nobody is watching.
  5. Exercise: There are so many studies out there that prove time and time again the benefits of physical activity. You’ll be healthy, have more confidence, and socialize with people while doing so.

You are incredibly unique and special. You are talented and very smart in your own way. We all have our niches and areas in which we excel. Always continue to improve yourself, and never stop learning. There are few handouts in life; people will rarely go out of their way to help you. To be successful in life, always invest in yourself.
