Saving money on booking vacations

Saving money on booking vacations

Going on vacation is something that many of us enjoy doing, but it’s not always a super affordable expense, especially if you have to go at certain times of the year (i.e. summer). Of course I’m all about saving money in life, even on vacations. I’ve learned a few tips and tricks on not overpaying for vacations, and am able to not break the bank every time I go! Let’s explore a couple of tips:

Use flight comparison sites

Flights can be one of those things that fluctuates in price from time to time, and so it might be worth using flight comparison sites to ensure that you are getting the best deal. These websites (Trivago, Kayak, Expedia) can also show you combinations such as different airlines for different routes, or even considering stopovers to bring there cost down. Some of them will give you a fare estimate, letting you know historically if this is a good deal or not. I’ve even been known to keep a spreadsheet of flights I’m tracking! As with most things we purchase, shop around on flights!

Shop around for rental cars

Rental cars might not always be an essential for your vacation, but it can make traveling much easier when you arrive. Depending on where you’re going and the availability of Uber/Lyft, it could make sense just to have your own car, especially if you’ll be moving around a fair amount. Similar to flights, shop around online for better deals. Most travel sites will have cars as well and you may even be surprised how cheap you can rent a car for. You could always visit burswoodcarrentals.com.au as a starting point and then take it from there.

Go off peak

There will always be popular times of the year to go on vacation, for example summer months when kids are out of school are great for families (mine included). However, if you have flexibility in your travel plans, consider some off peak times of year, like spring or fall. You may find similar weather but less crowds and less of a cost to get out there.

Stay in smaller hotels

It can be tempting to want to stay in the big all inclusive hotel, but often doing that can mean that you are paying a hefty price tag for the privilege. Again shopping around, checking out vacation feedback websites (I love TripAdvisor) and look for smaller hotels that can be just as great may help you to save money and have the opportunity to enjoy the local surroundings instead of just staying at the resort. While big names like Marriotts or Hiltons are often first on your list, you may find some deals at some more mom and pop type hotels, and may even have a nicer stay!

Consider AirBnB instead of hotels

Sometimes the hotel vacatoin isn’t always for everyone, and you want your own space and chance to do your own thing. This is when considering vacation rentals for apartments or villas instead of a hotel could be the best option for you. Renting your own spot gives you the chance to enjoy self catering options and eat out, but also the added benefit of being able to make things at home such as breakfast and lunch. Making your own breakfast and lunch will help save some money! I’ve also enjoyed AirBnBs with their washer/dryers…and have packed much lighter and have done laundry onsite!

Use online websites for discount codes and vouchers

Finally, make sure that you think about using discount codes and vouchers for things like flights and accommodation, even attractions or sightseeing. There will always be deals to be had and booking things in advance can help to save money overall. I rarely book something without first Googling “______ discount code” and more often than not I’ll find something like 10% or more off.

Let’s hope that these tips help you when it comes to saving money on your next vacation!
