Moving Cities and Finding Housing

Moving Cities and Finding Housing

Moving to move to a new city, but haven’t found a place to live yet? Finding a place to live can definitely add to your stress – on top of all the other stressful aspects of moving! You may be thinking that you only have expensive apartments to choose from, but the good news is that there are actually many different places to stay that may not initially come to mind!. Instead of leaving your housing to chance, here are some things to think about.

Condos And Luxury Apartments

To start with what may be obvious, apartments and condos are definitely pretty common options when moving to a new city. A condo will be similar to an apartment except that you’ll own it vs an apartment you’ll just be renting. An apartment has the benefit of likely only locking you into a 1 year lease, which will give you time to explore and figure out the new city as opposed to locking you in for something longer via a condo purchase. Or if you know what you’re after, a condo might be good! There are all sorts of options ranging from $ to $$$ (or wait it’s 2023 and real estate is expensive so let’s say $$ to $$$$), depending on where you want to stay and how much you want to pay. When you’re looking for a place to stay, you should definitely add luxury apartments and condos (I’d start with Zillow!) to your list of places to check out.

Business Housing

This is a great choice for people who want a temporary place to stay until they find their dream home in a new city. Most people who rent this kind of housing are business travelers, but anyone can rent one if they want to. It’s a great short-term solution for people who are moving and need a place to store their things. Sometimes if you are relocating for work, your company might assist in finding you a business housing apartment, or may have arrangements in the city for a discounted rate. These are nice as they might offer more flexibility in terms of how long you need to stay (i.e. offering less than a 1 year lease).

Hotels For Extended Stays

While you’re looking for a place to live, why not think about staying in a hotel for a long time? This isn’t like a regular hotel, where you pay for each night you stay. Instead, an extended-stay hotel is better for people who want to stay a little longer because it has more room and better prices. Although this might be pricier vs an apartment, this could be a good solution if you are out of options needing a place to stay for a few weeks! Larger hotel chains like Marriott, IHG and Hilton all offer extended stay type hotels. Look around and see which ones are in your price range.

Rentals For Vacation

With the power of the Internet, there are a lot of temporary housing options available today. Most people are letting tourists who are in the city for a few days and need a place to stay in their homes or apartments. Many of these are temporary, but you can stay in some of them for a long time until you find a permanent place to live. Keep in mind that in these situations, you’ll be making a contract directly with the property owner instead of going through a big company. AirBnb is probably the most popular site offering such a service, and what’s great is that it’s not just for vacations!

Sub Letting

You could rent from a person who owns an apartment instead of buying your own. This is called subletting, and the person who rents the apartment is responsible for renting out part of it to someone else. In most cases, they must first get permission from their landlord before subletting. However, not everyone does. Before subletting an apartment from a renter, there are some warning signs you should look out for so you don’t get caught up in a legal nightmare. Browse online to see if there are reputable options out there for you to sublet, or network with friends or colleagues in the area for referrals!

Summary

If you do your research and are patient, finding a place to stay in the city doesn’t have to be a nightmare. It can be exciting to start a new chapter in your life, but it can quickly go wrong if you don’t have everything ready, but don’t fret if you haven’t found your perfect place just yet!
